As farmers we are stewards of the land and our stock, and with that comes a responsibility. More often than not tough decisions have to be made, most often when you least expect it.
Sadly yesterday I said goodbye to my dear alpaca Lucy Lou. She had fallen prey to the dreaded fly strike after sustaining a wound in the last week. The temperatures hadn’t helped. By the time it had become evident it was far kinder to send her off with the green dream than put her through the ordeal of major surgery; her odds of surviving that were low at best.
I don’t feel the need to go into more detail with this one. For those who have seen and experienced fly strike you will appreciate the horror. To any who haven’t then I pray that you never will.
